COPPIE DI FATTO E ALTRO
LA FUNZIONE DIPENDE DALLA FORMA
UN PROGETTO DI NATHALIE DU PASQUIER PER MUTINA EDITIONS
5 settembre 2025
Mutina presents Coppie di Fatto, the second collection designed by Nathalie Du Pasquier for the Mutina Editions project. The collection will be unveiled in Paris on 5 September from 6 PM, at the Librairie Yvon Lambert. For the occasion, an installation on view until 5 October will showcase the new vases alongside the iconic Paesaggi collection. The Editions will remain available for purchase at the bookshop even after the exhibition ends.
Librairie Yvon Lambert is a hybrid space in the Marais district, where visual art meets publishing, fostering a vibrant dialogue between artists, the public, and the printed page.
With Coppie di Fatto, Nathalie Du Pasquier continues her exploration into the transformative potential of ceramics. The collection’s apparent simplicity conceals a subtle and surprising idea. The artist envisioned a series of handmade ceramic objects that challenge traditional definitions: vases that turn into bowls, containers that can be flipped and take on different functions depending on how they’re positioned. Some hold a single flower, others become generous vases for more elaborate compositions. Yet, the playfulness always reveals itself: these pieces exist as pairs, because it is in the dialogue between forms that their double meaning comes to life.
The name itself, Coppie di Fatto, wittily reflects this dual nature. Some pieces are conceived as inseparable pairs, while others stand out with a more enigmatic, sculptural character.
Each element of Coppie di Fatto is entirely handmade using the potter’s wheel technique, in accordance with Italian artisanal tradition. After a two-week drying phase, the master craftsmen proceed with the first firing and then glazing. Every piece is signed and sequentially numbered, highlighting the exclusivity of the production.
The collection consists of two series. The first features seven colourful pairs glazed in a palette typical of the artist’s sensibility. These are open-edition works, sold exclusively in pairs, which immediately express the playful and versatile nature of the collection. The spray glazing technique, simple yet flexible, allows for a wide variety of colours and combinations.
The second series takes on a deeper tone with matte black pieces created using the ancient immersion glazing technique. Only the skilled hands of master artisans can master this delicate process, which requires slow, precise gestures and a unique sensibility to achieve a smooth, velvety surface. These seven pieces, produced in a limited edition of ten plus three A.P., are available both individually and as sets of seven. Mysterious, sculptural, and silent, they seem to emerge from another time.
Among the Editions on display this September will also be Paesaggi (2022), a collection of sculptural objects in which architectural silhouettes create miniature, almost metaphysical landscapes. A project that explores the boundary between art and design, transforming ceramics into a poetic language and inviting us to rediscover the hidden beauty of everyday objects.
With Coppie di Fatto, Nathalie Du Pasquier presents a project that celebrates joy, irony, and the possibility of seeing things from multiple perspectives. The collection adds a new chapter to the ongoing creative dialogue between the French artist and Mutina, which began in 2019 with the site-specific installation BRIC for the Mutina for Art project. Since then, her collaboration with Mutina’s CEO, Massimo Orsini, has evolved into a solid friendship—one that has led to the creation of Brac, Mattonelle Margherita, and Paesaggi. A creative synergy that continues to produce original and unexpected results, transcending the boundaries between art, design, and ceramic experimentation.
