We went for a chat with Karla Otto, world’s renowned PR and communications agency founder, a woman that changed a lot the rules of the game of fashion and design industry and culture.
Karla Otto is now based worldwide, through Milan, Paris, London, New York City, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Bejing, and it has a network of high profiled clients through different creative fields, such as fashion, cinema, theatre, arts and design.
Who was Karla Otto before becoming the world renowned PR that everybody knows?
I was a girl eager to know the world and explore cultures, thanks to good genes, a model.
What did you have in mind when you first started on your own with the Karla Otto PR consulting?
I started in the 80s, a magic moment in fashion and in culture in general. Everything was quite spontaneous back then. I did not have a detailed plan in mind, just a firm will to use my natural skills for communication within the exciting fashion environment. Passion and determination led my way.
How much aesthetics, design and arts influence your activity? In which way do you convey in with them?
Aesthetic and design are part of my daily life. They are what i surround myself with and what i work with. They fuel my passion for beauty, creation & innovation.
What are your interests on the design landscape?
I like design as a whole: the creative act of redesigning our daily surroundings, from the clothes we wear to the furniture we use and the architecture we see all around us.
How did Mutina’s new collaboration start?
We already knew the work of Mutina – and we loved it – and Mutina was interested in knowing us. When we met with Massimo we found there is a shared passion towards design, art & fashion. We both believe art, design and fashion are interconnected ways to look at the world around us and convey inspiring, relevant visions. With such a great product and a shared view on the approach we knew it would be great to work together.
In your opinion, what are the keys of success in design communication?
I believe Innovation, consistency and authenticity are all pivotal elements in communicating design.
What have been the most inspiring brands you have worked with so far?
I am fortunate to have worked, and continue to work, with many creative, innovative and extremely inspiring brands, it would be impossible to name just one.
What innovations have you brought in your services and how are you projecting them into the future?
I try to keep my services in sync with the times, tailoring my work to the demands of contemporary communication. Today, it means a balance of traditional and digital communication.
If you could completely change your life, workwise, what would you do?
I’d do it all again, in exactly the same way.
