The new 3D element by Konstantin Grcic
Hives is the new 3D element designed by Konstantin Grcic for Mutina. It’s an hexagonal brick inspired by the structure of beehives, the most efficient constructions found in nature, almost infinitely expandable.
Hives features one single module: an hexagonal brick available in the size 13x22,5x7 cm, functional, versatile – it has been designed to build walls, architectural structures and furnishings – and decorative at the same time, thanks to its particular shape which allows to develop original graphic patterns.
Hives is realised in terracotta, an ancient building material of which it retains the acoustic and thermal properties, the warm shade and the tactile texture. The module is produced by extrusion, an artisanal technique that allows to obtain an element with an organic structure and always unique and unexpected details.
The bricks can be installed both in upright orientation, to build dividing walls, and in flat orientation. In this way, they can be placed laid flush with each other or in a staggered arrangement, giving birth to curved walls for the construction of architectural elements and furniture, such as columns, counters and table legs.
