Woven Cosmos, the new solo exhibition by Hella Jongerius, officially inaugurated on April 29th at Berlin-based Gropius Bau and will be open to the public until August 15th. It is very peculiar, as the research carried out by the artist stays open throughout the duration of the show, during which the visitors are invited to participate actively by reconsidering their relation with objects.
As Jongerius explained, Woven Cosmos is a mean to understand the cultural meaning of weaving beyond material and technique. This is also deeply linked with challenges of our time such as sustainability, social responsibility and spirituality, that are re-examined through interactive installations.
Furthermore, Woven Cosmos is closely related with Gropius Bau origins. The structure was inaugurated in 1881 as Museum and School of the Decorative Arts with its own workshop, a place where different disciplines come together, and nowadays it presents international shows of great authority. Taking inspiration from this story, the artist and her studio produce work on site in the months leading up to the exhibition.
